Warwick Wolverines vs. Coventry Jets Preview

by Andrew Gambrill
This Sunday sees the Varsity match up between Coventry University Jets and University of Warwick Wolverines.
Coventry University Jets

Last time around the heavily favoured Wolverines with what was thought to be a superior passing attack came up short when the Jets’ tenacity pulled them through in a tense affair.

We enter this year with a similar scenario. Warwick has proven technical ability and more game time under their belts however, Coventry’s team spirit whilst still in tact could be lacking the passion of their predecessors.

Injuries could play a part with the real possibility of all The Elite players stood (or sat) on the sideline. The Jets’ Natalie Parker fractured metatarsal in the recent loss to The Cougars, which definitely rules her out. Warwick will probably be missing Elite Captain Louise Lee with a mouth injury and possibly QB Jessica Critchley with an ankle injury. The Wolverines have an established replacement to step up with Erin Robinson likely to continue her successful stint under centre.

Both sides can boast an emerging talent. Martha Michaud’s progress for Warwick has been remarkable in that she seems to out perform even the boldest predictions in every game. For the Jets, the no less talented but with a little less time in the game is Emily Bazaglo has quickly picked up many technical qualities.

One other advantage the Jets have is, they retain two of the victorious squad members of that inaugural game including TD heroine Fran Smith along with veteran Sarah Westlake.

I think one thing for certain is that the quality of the game will be higher than the original, with less running and more passing. Indeed, in Warwick’s recent game against RHUL the combined pass completion percentage was just over 80% with only 1 in 6 plays being a run.

All in all an exciting and hard fought game is anticipated with Warwick once again entering as favourites but, we know how that worked out last time.
